The Randy Schopen Foundation awarded a grant of $1,000 to The Jefferson County Health Department Safe Kids Program. This program helps children living in Jefferson County who are in need of safe sleep education and car safety seat education. In addition to education, car safety seats and cribs are available to those assessed to be in need by the Health Department Public Health Nurses.

The Health Department has organized and leads a “Child Death Review Team” that looks at the causes of childhood deaths and how to prevent them through policy development or system-wide education. As a result of the findings of the Child Death Review Team the Health Department developed and enhanced two programs. “Cribs for Kids” which provides Pack N Plays and safe sleep education and support, and “Car Safety Seats” program that teaches parents and others how to safely install the seats and offers car safety seats to those in need.
